The Pilates Method
Joseph Pilates (1880-1967), the founder of pilates, called his method “Contrology”. The movements designed by Pilates require concentration and precision with the exerciser eventually gaining mastery of their minds over the complete control of their bodies. As a nurse in World War I he invented exercise apparatus for inactive patients by attaching springs to their hospital beds. He created core strengthening and spine stabilizing exercises based on simple equipment and later mat. With his great successes, he was sought after as a trainer and rehabilitator for dancers such as Martha Graham, Ruth St. Denis and George Balanchine in his New York City studio since 1926.
Pilates is based on six principles : concentration, control, centering, flow, precision and breathing. The routines are non-impact and biomechanically safe. The movements stretch and strengthen all major muscle groups without ignoring the smaller, weaker muscles. The exercises can be performed in a small group or individually instructed on a mat or using the apparatus: the reformer, Cadillac / trapeze table, Wunda / combo chair, spine corrector and ladder barrel.
